About Pramukh Swami Maharaj

Pramukh Swami Maharaj (1921–2016), born Shantilal Patel in Chansad, Gujarat, was the fifth spiritual successor of the Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS). From early childhood, he demonstrated deep devotion, humility, and a natural inclination toward prayer and service, eventually dedicating his life entirely to spiritual upliftment.

As the global spiritual leader of BAPS for over four decades, he inspired millions through personal guidance, moral teachings, and compassionate outreach. He led the construction of majestic mandirs worldwide, expanded humanitarian services, and strengthened spiritual communities, leaving a lasting legacy of faith, unity, and selfless service.

1921
Birth in Chansad

Born as Shantilal Patel on 7 December 1921 in the village of Chansad, Gujarat, he displayed spiritual inclination and compassion from early childhood. His calm nature, devotion to prayer, and moral discipline laid the strong foundation for a life dedicated entirely to God and humanity.

1940
Initiation into Monastic Life

At the age of eighteen, he renounced worldly life and was initiated into the monastic order by Shastriji Maharaj. Receiving Bhagwati Diksha, he embraced a life of simplicity, celibacy, and selfless service, dedicating himself fully to spiritual practice and the upliftment of society.

1950
Appointed as Pramukh (President)

In 1950, Shastriji Maharaj appointed him as the President (Pramukh) of BAPS, recognizing his humility, dedication, and leadership qualities. Despite his young age, he accepted the responsibility with obedience and sincerity, guiding organizational growth while remaining deeply rooted in spiritual discipline.

1971
Became Spiritual Successor

After the earthly departure of Yogiji Maharaj in 1971, he became the spiritual successor and global guru of BAPS. With profound compassion and tireless travel, he personally connected with devotees worldwide, strengthening faith, inspiring moral living, and expanding spiritual activities across continents.

1992
Akshardham Gandhinagar Inauguration

Under his divine inspiration, the majestic Akshardham complex in Gandhinagar was inaugurated in 1992. This cultural and spiritual landmark became a symbol of devotion, Indian heritage, and architectural excellence, attracting millions and spreading the timeless message of peace and harmony.

2016
Mahasamadhi

On 13 August 2016, Pramukh Swami Maharaj entered his eternal abode after a lifetime of service. His passing marked the completion of an extraordinary spiritual era, yet his teachings, mandirs, humanitarian initiatives, and transformed lives continue to inspire generations worldwide.
